Andy grew up in the Canberra suburb of Wanniassa and attended Narrabundah College. He played violin for the Canberra Youth Orchestra and worked with Canberra Youth Theatre.
Career Stage Andy Leonard has worked extensively in theatre both in Australia and internationally. He is known for his role as Gio in The Vegemite Tales, which enjoyed successful seasons in London’s West End and at Riverside Studios. His stage career began in the late 1990s with The Male Line, Moonchildren, and A Property of the Clan. Other highlights include Gagarin Way (2004), Tidy Town of the Year (co-written with Victoria Greiner and Sarah Hodgetts), The Importance of Being Earnest Dragons and Other Tales (2012), and a South East Asian tour of Only Fools and Horses (2019). Musical Theatre Recent work includes Rabbits On A Red Planet (2023), Defeating Roger Federer (2020, 2022), Nine (2019), Keating! (2015), and Good Omens. Film & Television Andy’s film credits include Found Footage (2010), Something of Vengeance (2009), and Souvenir (2005). His TV appearances include Doctor Doctor (2016), A Place to Call Home (2015), Love Child (2013), Love You to Death (2003), and Conversations with a Dead Poet (1999). Web & Short Film He wrote and starred in Luca (2012), inspired by his own experience of cardiac arrest. Other works include The Women Who Were Never There (2015), Imagination (2016), and the web musical True Traffic Jam (2016). Cabaret & Directing Andy created the solo cabaret Adolf and Eva (2009), and devised Happily Ever After (2008–10). He also directed the Australian premiere of Next Fall at The Seymour Centre (2016). Personal Life Andy lives in Sydney with his partner, Juani Vicente Ponce, and their two children, Orlando and Frida, both born through surrogacy. In 2011, while performing Kiss Me Kate in China, Andy suffered a cardiac arrest and was diagnosed with Brugada Syndrome. |
